I don't know about you, but I definitely started 2009 with great people and, as always, lots of laughs. I've been unemployed for two full weeks now, but as I look back the good days certainly outweigh the bad days.
I spent an entire week with family, then spent most of this past week with great friends. I've also spent the last week reading a fantastic book titled The Shack.
The story is of a man who, after facing one of the most horrible nightmares any parent would lose sleep over, finds comfort and love by spending time in the presence of God. This little experience almost seems involuntary, but life changing non the less.
What caught my attention the most was how the author, William P. Young, was able to effortlessly weave parts of scripture into every inch of imagery, metaphor and syntax throughout most of the novel. If not careful, you could read right over the obvious, but it doesn't take away from the story or make if dry and, sad to say, corny (as some books tend to be).
Some of the scenes and situations are so vivid you can actually feel yourself moving and interacting with the characters. Other scenes will leave you mesmerized and wondering, "is this really what God and heaven are like?"
As the narrator sets the stage in the first few chapters, the story seems to drag just a little. I almost stopped reading it more than a couple of times, but after hearing so many great things about it I kept reading - just to see what all the fuss was about. I'm so glad I kept reading!
I encourage anyone who hasn't read The Shack to do so! It will leave you re-evaluating your own relationships - with God and every person in your life.
